Skills Workshops

Over the course of this year we offer adult specific workshops and courses. This is one of our greatest passions, to share the skills to empower our community to become more engaged in food, crafting with our hands, and connecting to wilderness.

Adult Trailing: The Art & Challenge of Following Tracks

Join Casey McFarland on this two-day field course learning to efficiently follow tracks across varied landscapes with the purpose of finding the animals that made them. We’ll cover all the elements of good trailing methodology: training the eye to recognize subtle sign, aging tracks, recovering lost trails, anticipating where tracks and animals are on the landscape ahead, watching and listening for natural alarms, and moving fluidly and quietly.

Over the two-days, our goal will be to follow several miles of trail… some human-made to establish good trailing method, and the remainder on moose or other animal trails to develop our ability to interpret behavior from tracks and sign and assess landscapes for animal whereabouts.

Casey McFarland trains biologists, research teams, eco-tourism guides, and the general public to interpret the tracks, signs, and trails of wildlife. A Senior Tracker and Senior International Evaluator for CyberTracker Conservation, he works around the globe to develop and support wildlife tracking skill and ecological knowledge. A skilled educator and all-around outdoorsman, Casey provides Track & Sign and Trailing Evaluations—as well as a variety of backcountry expeditions and wildlife courses.

He is also co-author of the all new Peterson Field Guide to North American Bird Nests (Aug 2021), Bird Feathers (2010); and Mammal Tracks and Sign, 2nd Ed. (2019)

Community Skills Share

We have such a rich and enthusiastic community that we would like to bring together and provide a place to share ancestral skills, work on individual projects, make space in our lives for community building and interactions, and enjoy a sense of time richness together on the land.

You can show up for as long as you please. Some months the Skills Share will include events, such as a focus on a specific skill or a potluck.

Families – All family members of all ages are welcome. Parents are asked to accompany their children to this event if their children are under the age of 13. We will provide water and a composting toilet. There are no dogs allowed at this event.
